《열리는 사이 : INTERVAL OF APPEARANCE》

“There is no difference between myself and the world around.”

— Ben Cullen Williams, In Self

Neither the body nor nature holds still for long. Measured, scanned, developed, they slip away in the process, and by the time you think you have caught something, it has already passed.

A synchronised flash catches a body twice within a single frame, sharp and trailing at once. Film negatives are lowered into chlorine until the emulsion swells and turns. A tree rotates in a scan, and beside it stand figures an AI has synthesised from the dancers, the life drawn out of them. A ridgeline reads like a tensed spine, a body is handled like eroding terrain. The same technology cuts them both to the same measure.

The body becomes material, measured, stilled, rewritten. Laser-cut and folded aluminium closes on the moment with a sharp edge. The frame is not only what borders the image but a structure that stands in space, and its edge never fully closes. The body enters it and is still not wholly held, always escaping the process. The movement that could not be contained, the flesh that refuses containment. At the very moment the machine grips hardest, it is already elsewhere. The subject is the interval itself, the gap that opens around the event. A smooth surface lets the eye glide past, but this work holds the gaze. The moment anything is touched, it has already withdrawn. The touching and the touched never quite coincide. The work reaches toward that non-coincidence and arrives at the place left open.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art (RCA), Ben Cullen Williams has worked with Google DeepMind and the MIT Media Lab and collaborated with choreographer Wayne McGregor for nearly a decade. His work has been presented at the Venice Biennale, Somerset House in London, and the Musée d’arts de Nantes, among others, and continues to explore the boundaries between art, technology, and the body.

This is his first solo exhibition in Seoul. Across C-type prints from analogue and digital images, chlorine-corroded negatives, folded aluminium frames, and moving-image installation, body and nature become a single terrain beneath the instruments that would hold them. What withdraws the more you reach for it, and draws you to reach again. The exhibition follows that reaching.

Ben Cullen Williams is a London-based artist whose practice spans diverse mediums and modes of presentation. Within his work, inhabited landscapes and bodies are not static entities, but entangled components of a constantly shifting, technologically altered system. By blending analogue decay, archival preservation, and algorithmic processing, Williams reveals environments in perpetual transition—spaces where human life, nature, and technology can no longer be separated.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Williams utilizes 8mm, 35mm, and medium-format film alongside digital fabrication, digital image capture and generation, and machine learning. His practice is informed by long-term cross-disciplinary collaborations, including nearly a decade of work with choreographer Wayne McGregor, expeditions with polar explorer Robert Swan, and research-led works with Google DeepMind and the MIT Media Lab.

Williams’ work has been exhibited, performed, and screened internationally at venues including the Musée d'arts de Nantes, CAFA Art Museum Beijing, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Los Angeles, Somerset House London, Shinjuku Vision Tokyo, and the Venice Biennale. This presentation marks his first solo exhibition in Seoul.
