벤 컬런 윌리엄스는 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 작가로, 다양한 매체와 전시 형식을 아우르는 작업을 전개해왔다. 그의 작업에서 사람이 깃든 풍경과 신체는 고정된 실체가 아니라, 끊임없이 변화하며 기술적으로 변형되는 하나의 시스템 속에서 서로 얽힌 요소로 존재한다. 아날로그의 부식, 아카이브적 보존, 알고리즘적 처리를 결합하며, 그는 인간의 삶과 자연과 기술이 더 이상 분리될 수 없는 공간, 끊임없는 이행 속에 놓인 환경을 드러낸다.

 

왕립예술학교(Royal College of Art)를 졸업했으며, 8mm·35mm·중형 필름과 함께 디지털 파브리케이션, 디지털 이미지 캡처와 생성, 기계학습을 다룬다. 그의 작업은 장기적이고 학제를 넘나드는 협업에 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 안무가 웨인 맥그리거와의 10년 가까운 작업, 극지 탐험가 로버트 스완과의 원정, 구글 딥마인드 및 MIT 미디어랩과의 연구 기반 작업 등이 이에 포함된다.

 

윌리엄스의 작업은 낭트 미술관, 베이징 중앙미술학원 미술관(CAFA), 로스앤젤레스 도로시 챈들러 파빌리온, 런던 서머셋 하우스, 도쿄 신주쿠 비전, 베니스 비엔날레 등에서 국제적으로 전시, 공연, 상영되었다.  이번 전시는 그의 첫 서울 개인전이다.

Ben Cullen Williams is a London-based artist whose practice spans diverse mediums and modes of presentation. Within his work, inhabited landscapes and bodies are not static entities, but entangled components of a constantly shifting, technologically altered system. By blending analogue decay, archival preservation, and algorithmic processing, Williams reveals environments in perpetual transition—spaces where human life, nature, and technology can no longer be separated.

 

A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Williams utilizes 8mm, 35mm, and medium-format film alongside digital fabrication, digital image capture and generation, and machine learning. His practice is informed by long-term cross-disciplinary collaborations, including nearly a decade of work with choreographer Wayne McGregor, expeditions with polar explorer Robert Swan, and research-led works with Google DeepMind and the MIT Media Lab.

 

Williams’ work has been exhibited, performed, and screened internationally at venues including the Musée d'arts de Nantes, CAFA Art Museum Beijing, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Los Angeles, Somerset House London, Shinjuku Vision Tokyo, and the Venice Biennale. This presentation marks his first solo exhibition in Seoul.
